Mussolini Captured & Executed

Wednesday, 25th July 1945

Mussolini was captured near Lake Como (45.8159,9.080) by Italian partisans when he attempted to escape Switzerland. He was summary executed by firing squad immediately after he was captured. His body was then taken to public square, Piazzale Loreto (45.486,9.217), in Milan where his body reviled and spat upon by his countrymen. It was then hosted up and hung upside down at a petrol station for public viewing and to provide confirmation of his death.

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini, an ardent nationalist, became the 27th Prime Minister of Italy after the "March on Rome". Benito Mussolini had earlier defy the authority of the king. In order to avoid plunging Italy into a civil war, the king of Italy declared Benito Mussolini as the Prime Minister of Italy. Benito Mussolini was an Italian politician who led the National Fascist Party was credited with being one of the key figures in the creation of fascism. Benito Mussolini was powerful and merciless. Mussolini banned all political parties and curtailed personal liberties which made him an official dictator.


March On Rome

The March on Rome (Marcia su Roma) was a march by National Fascist Party (Partito Nazionale Fascista, or PNF) which took place from 22 to 29 October 1922. The "march" was a coup mounted by the fascists.
